چکیده

Ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites based on a ZrB2/SiC have been investigated for the fabrication of reusable nozzles propulsion. Three De Laval nozzle prototypes, obtained by sintering with either hot pressing or spark plasma sintering, were tested 2-3 times in hybrid rocket motor proving reusability. Sections extracted after oxidation tests to study microstructural changes and oxidative thermomechanical stresses induced repeated tests. Compared reference graphite nozzle, no measurable erosion was observed UHTCMC-based nozzles. The mechanism consisted formation ZrO2 intermediate layer, liquid SiO2 layer surface that displaced action gas flux towards divergent part protecting it from further oxidation. Both specimens HP SPS displayed similar performance, very slight differences which attributed small porosity. These demonstrated capability complex-shaped prototypes made developed UHTCMC survive exposure environments representative realistic space propulsion application, an overall operating time up 30 s, without any failure nor erosion, making promising step development components.

Phase and Microstructural Correlation of Spark Plasma Sintered HfB2-ZrB2 Based Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic Composites

Abstract: The refractory diborides (HfB2 and ZrB2) are considered as promising ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTCs) where low damage tolerance limits their application for the thermal protection system in re-entry vehicles. In this regard, SiC and CNT have been synergistically added as the sintering aids and toughening agents in the spark plasma sintered (SPS) HfB2-ZrB2 system. Herein, a nove...

Effect of SiC Content on the Ablation and Oxidation Behavior of ZrB2-Based Ultra High Temperature Ceramic Composites

The ablation and oxidation of ZrB₂-based ultra high temperature ceramic (UHTC) composites containing 10%, 15% and 30% v/v SiC were tested under different heat fluxes in a high frequency plasma wind tunnel. Performance was significantly affected by the surface temperature, which was strongly dependent on the composition. Composites containing 10% SiC showed the highest surface temperature (>2300...
